I would say every homeowner should know how to repair a toilet. I just saw a google commercial where google is advertising they showed the customer how to repair a fill valve. The homeowner was so proud they replaced the fill valve. I think the commercial is accurate but at the same time it is wrong. I got a call from a customer one time where he was just going to replace his fill valve, but he ended up breaking the angle stop and caused water damage to his house. Replacing a fill valve is about the easiest thing a plumber will do but I've lost count the amount of times I've seen a homeowner mess it up. There is about 7 steps to installing a fill valve. All seven steps need to be done correctly. Other common problems with toilets is flapper, tank to bowl bolts, tank to bowl gasket, handle, toilet bolts, bad toilet flange, cracked toilet and overflow tube.
Why would you install a new toilet instead of repairing your current toilet? Outdated appearance, enhance comfort, constant clogging, severe mineral buildup and high water consumption are some of reasons. When installing a new toilet there is numerous things you need to consider. What is the measurement from back of wall to center of toilet flange. Round or elongated bowl. Height of toilet. One or two piece. Style or brand of toilet. Gold or porcelain toilet. Bidet or regular toilet. Standard or jumbo wax ring. Wax ring with horn or no horn.
What if you're remodeling your bathroom? Residential code requires the toilet to have at least 15 inches clearance from center of toilet flange to side wall or other obstruction like a cabinet. You have to have 21 inches in front of toilet. Commercial code requires 18 inch clearance from center of toilet flange to side wall or other obstruction like a cabinet. You have to have 24 inches in front of toilet. This doesn't include ADA requirements.
